News in Our Schools
In front of a crowd filled with joyful families, the fifth-grade students of Pequenakonck Elementary School walked across the stage to receive their certificates of completion. They reflected on their experiences in elementary school, sang heartfelt songs, shared memories and photographs, and took their first steps toward middle school, eager to embrace new challenges ahead.
The North Salem Middle School auditorium was filled with pride and celebration as eighth-grade students took center stage during their annual promotion ceremony. As students stood for recognition, teachers highlighted each student's proudest accomplishments from the year.
Salt crystals danced like tiny fountains, rulers buzzed with mysterious vibrations, and excited first-graders discovered that what looked like magic was, in fact, science. Jessica Farney's class at Pequenakonck Elementary School experienced an unforgettable lesson when Visiting Scientist Stacy Smith from Hi Touch Hi Tech transformed their classroom into a hands-on laboratory of sound and light
The North Salem Middle/High School hallways echoed with laughter and dance music as students gathered for the second-ever Structured Teaching Educational Program (STEP) sleepover, an evening filled with gooey s'mores, a dance party under the stars, spooky ghost stories, a delicious breakfast, and time with good friends.
"Snow rushed past me. It felt bitter cold against my skin and quickened my breath. Plants and animals were swept into the avalanche like a seashell swept into the ocean," said teacher Jean Dobbs-Sullivan as she read a student's essay aloud. She turned to her class to ask, "Did you picture this? I felt like I could picture the whole thing. Did you feel the emotion in this?"
Starting this September, students and families will benefit from a new schedule to enhance well-being and academic success. After years of research and community discussion, the shift to later school start times begins this September, giving everyone an extra half hour of morning time to recharge and prepare for the day ahead
